The Work of Byron Katie® is a simple process of self-inquiry. We don't need to believe our stressful thoughts. We question them. Through inquiry, we come home to our authentic and true selves. We discover who we would be without those stressful situations.
Without inquiry, you convince yourself that you are stuck in the situation, left to deal with it alone, replaying the emotional thoughts repeatedly. This brings self-judgments, regrets, depression, anger, and a sense of hopelessness.
The Work frees our thinking. We are able to see patterns in our lives, and begin to unravel layers of doubts and misbeliefs about ourselves. The Work is a skill to take into the rest of your life to find the wisdom inside you, the last place we look.
Most people benefit greatly from engaging with a coach who walks them through the process, assisting them as they dig deeper into the four questions and turnarounds outlined in The Work.
When you start from a place of confusion, suffering, and seeing no way forward, a coach becomes your awareness agent, diving into the mystery with you, and partnering with you as you lead yourself out of what you are experiencing. Then you enter into freedom and the discomfort begins to melt away. You recognize patterns in your thinking and gain the realization you're no longer a victim of your thoughts. Finally, you become keenly aware of your own capacity to self-inquiry.
“Inquiry becomes alive in you, as the natural wordless response to awareness to the thoughts that arise.” - Katie in Thousand Names for Joy
Byron Katie found The Work in 1986, which is accessible on her website, TheWork.com.
